Do You Know Your Wines?

Understanding wine can not only be intimidating it can feel like a mystery. There are many different facets of wine appreciation that date back as far 6000 BC and people have been fascinated with it ever since. Books have been written, and courses have been taught just to engage in the consumption of this ritual. However, for those who are novice wine connoisseurs where does wine comprehension begin?

It would seem the best place to begin is wine classification. There are technically four kinds of wine which are white, red, rose/blush, and champagne. Of these classifications there are thousands of varieties that are created, although there is a significant distinction based on where they are produced. European wines are often named by the region from which they came from such as Chianti or Bordeaux. Yet non-European wines or “varietals” are most often named from the primary grape used to make the wine such as Pinot Noir or Merlot.

The next focus should be the evaluation of the wine. While assessing wine the participant should notice the appearance, fragrance, and finally how it tastes. The appearance would include characteristics such as the color and clarity. This is also the phase which most engage in “swirling”. The purpose of swirling is to admire the “legs” or streaks which cling to the glass revealing details about the “body” of the wine. Then the fragrance of the wine can be appraised. This is referred to as the aroma or the bouquet. When examining younger wine it is typically referenced as the “aromas” whereas an older wine would have a “bouquet”. During this stage the observer might notice different scents such as floral, fruity, oaky, and more. Lastly, the much anticipated tasting of the wine begins. This allows the essence of the wine to awaken the palette and divulge hints of spice, citrus, and more. Now that the basics of wine are understood the taster can sample it alone or pair the wine with complimentary meals.
